2014 Shiraz Viognier

Shiraz grown in the red granite soils of Murrumbateman produces wines of great distinction and vlavour. Brambly fruit and a twist of white pepper are enlivened by co-fermentation with 4% Viognier.

Maturation in French oak hogsheads (300l barrels) gives spice and integration without intruding on the perfumed fruit. Whilst made to be enjoyed young, this wine will cellar gracefully. 

Our Dark Horse vineyard at Murrumbateman is farmed using Biodynamics for sustainability and to preserve its unique terroir.

A very fragrant, nicely orchestrated co-fermentation of 4% viognier here. This has a stack of blackberry and raspberry fruit aromas, clear perfume, lifted and attractive musky perfume. The palate is silky, tannins are fluffy and soft, really supple and juicy. Flavors of black cherry and cassis mixed with dark plum, then hints of chocolate; really fleshy and fresh. Drink now.

Co-fermented (4% viognier), matured in French oak. The colour isn’t as bright as expected given the viognier co-fermentation, and savoury/stemmy/minty nuances to the red fruits raise the question of full fruit maturity; that said, there is plenty to enjoy here.

The latest Lark Hill releases have impressed muchly, with a balance and delicacy that is on a whole new tier – next level good. This is the first time I’ve been really moved by one of this biodynamic pioneer’s reds though... There’s maybe a little more Viognier purple in colour, but it’s very much a Shiraz message, the nose a mix of dandelions, meat, some plummy red fruit and just a little chocolate. A beautiful nose. The rich, yet medium weight, slightly herbal palate is also smart, topped with deliciously fine, bony tannins.
An essay in Canberra via the northern Rhone, the joy here is just how vibrant, fresh and yet ripe this tastes, all spicy redcurrant deliciousness in all its glory. Yes from me. Best drinking: 2016-2025. 18.5/20, 94/100. 13%, $40. Would I buy it? On a list this would be a go-to. Especially with rabbit or something gamey.
