2014 Gruner Veltliner

2014 may be remembered as one of the most challenging vintages to date; frost in late Spring & unsettled conditions over flowering resulted in low fruit set and a modest crop.
What followed was our hottest & driest Summer on record, followed by our wettest Autumn on record.
Despite these extremes, our Gruner vines held their small crop of precious fruit and we were able to pick beautiful ripe, clean fruit in late April. 
The resulting wine is more subtle than the 2013, showing more white pepper, earthiness and a lively core of acidity giving length to the palate.

As with past vintages this wine was own-yeast fermented in older French oak, giving funk & texture behind the aromatic fruit characters.
Match with parsnip soup, white fish or young cheese on a hot summer night. We would recommend cellaring until at least early 2015 to allow this wine to open up after bottling. It will continue to evolve in the bottle for years to come, gaining complexity and richness with time.

An attractive and convincing example of this Austrian variety, showing all the ripe melon and white pepper characters that really define it; really fresh. The palate has a crisp acid core, bathed in attractive yellow peach fruit flavors. Seamless textural glide, terrific. Drink now.

May not have the same instant varietal signal of white pepper as it does in its home base of Austria, but it does have overall varietal character, gently mouthfilling, and with length and balance.

I look forward each year to the release of Lark Hill’s grüner veltliner, such is its anticipated quality. And the 2014 vintage, despite a hot and dry summer and a wet autumn in the Canberra region, does not disappoint. Picked in late April, the 2014 has aromatics that are quite subtle and complex with notes of talc, peach, pear, lemon, apple and apple blossom. The palate is dry, its acidity not overdone and balanced flavours of lemon, apple and earth are evident. This is another excellent grüner from Lark Hill.

Even in the difficult 2014 season, Austrian variety gruner veltliner made an outstanding wine at Canbera’s highest vineyard. The Carpenter family calls 2014 ‘one of the most challenging vintages to date’. Frost and unsettled spring weather disrupted flowering, reducing the crop. But what remained of the gruner veltliner, say the Carpenters, sucessfully weathered the hottest, driest summer and wettest autumn on record.
Spontaneously fermented in older oak barrels, the wine offers aromas of spice and melon and a richly textured palate, with unique flavours reminiscent of spice, herbs and melon rind. Steely acidity accentuates the flavours, gives a long finish and suggests a medium to long cellaring life.
